EnGaged: Carolyn Gage On Stage and Off
This short documentary focuses on lesbian playwright Carolyn Gage as she prepares to go on stage for her one-woman play, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc. An intensely personal artist, she discusses her evolution from what was considered in her youth to be the "normal" path for a woman to take, to recovering memories of abuse by her father and coming out as a lesbian. This psychological development dovetailed with her embarking on a career as a writer in a niche which was also, at that time, revolutionary. The segments of her play chosen for inclusion in the documentary highlight previously unexplored aspects of the life of St. Joan - such as evidence that she, too, was a lesbian - and experiences with which, it is apparent, the playwright strongly identifies.
EnGaged has received awards from Top Indie Film Awards, L.A. Shorts Awards, Move Me Productions Quarterly Online Short Film Festival, and NY Short Film Tuesdays @ BAIA.
